My Long Time Love Affair
With my precious travel journal that is.
Loving the unknown and craving adventure is in my blood. My whole life I have been surrounded by strong, self-supporting women who love themselves and embrace travelling. By the time my Mum was 21, she was living in the Caribbean, managing a door to door sales team of over 25 people and had travelled and lived in over 22 different countries. Her work was gruelling, and direct selling was not an easy task. However, it did allow her to see the world, and she did become addicted to the thrill of always going somewhere new.
I inherited her love of adventure and travel. The countries she went to, the stories that have shaped her life, inspired and motivated me to desire travel. This was a life I had envisioned for myself. I have never found any form of satisfaction in the same day to day life and routine.
Why is that?
Because once I got a taste of independence, an appreciation of living life outside of my comfort zone, a vision of how big the world is, and all the people I have yet to meet, it became all I desired.
Take a moment to reflect on all the people you have met in your life. Primarily while travelling. Don't you wish you had written down who they were, their names, their stories, the incredible night you shared together in the middle of the jungle in Costa Rica?
Well, I did. I've continuously had a particular sweet spot for writing. For writing in my journal that is. I would indulge myself for a whole day. Sit at a busy corner cafe in Paris with a beautiful glass of sauvignon blanc and people watch for hours and scribble in my journal about the people I see.
I am sure many of you have encountered the holiday blues, the post-trip depression. It used to hit me very strong. I would return back to Canada, everything surrounding me would be the same, never changing. I then realized I crave the anticipation and excitement of having something to look forward to. For me, that meant going somewhere new. I was in a complete state of Wanderlust.
Noun - wan·der·lust; Wanderlust is a strong desire for or impulses to wander or travel and explore the world.
Maintaining my journals has brought me so much comfort and joy. I am always looking forward to my next trip and imagining the stories I have yet to write. They are a pure, yet simple reflection right in front of me. When I read the pages, I can relive the moment and almost imitate the same rush, the same lavish appreciation.
My journal has travelled with me since February of 2015. And has explored over 25 different countries.
My journals guarantee that these memories will be forever recalled. There will come a day that I will no longer be able to remember that blurry night at the underground basement club in Amsterdam, or the BEST drunken kebab in Berlin that one Saturday night.
As my journal is VERY private and intimate, I won't be sharing it directly with you (lo siento). I would like to use it as a reference, a guideline. If I find myself in a country or a city that I have previously gotten to know, I will include the pages & stories of my time spent there many years ago. The raw, unedited pages.
Within my years of travel, and my incredible reflection on all the adventures I have had, I could not be more grateful for bringing along my journals. Picture being 80 years old, sitting next to your best travel partner. Laughing & reminiscing on all the times you pretended to be lesbian lovers in Portugal to ward off the creepers. Sounds nice eh?
For me, it is one of the most enjoyable forms of self-awareness and the most beautiful way to relive all the memories you have made. I HIGHLY suggest you consider journaling on your next trip, you will not be disappointed.
